Summer Festivities of Early Music 2019 - Rosa mystica
On the feast of St James, two mystical flowers will open at night: the white lily of St Agnes and a rose, the symbol of St Mary.
Their flowering will be inspired by the exquisite Belgian ensemble Utopia who will perform vespers by masters of the Franco-Flemish School, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Josquin Desprez, Nicolas Gombert, and Cristóbal de Morales.
Their works will be completed with music by lesser-known English composers, Richard Dering and Peter Philips, who left the British Isles for the Catholic Flanders during the Renaissance “Brexit”, and converted to the Franco-Flemish tradition.
Let us rejoice on the night at the close of which we shall behold a Rosa Mystica, beautifully woven in a Franco-Flemish tapestry. It is to laud the Mother of God, but also St Agnes whose canonization took place 30 years ago.
